Deep Blue is hosting Louis Gallois for a lecture on the reindustrialisation of France and Europe
On 17 April, the Centre for Economic and Social Research (Deep Blue) organised a conference on the reindustrialisation of France and Europe in the face of Chinese competition, in partnership with the Chair in Major Contemporary Strategic Issues at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne).
This meeting provided an opportunity to address one of the major strategic challenges of our time: the ability of France and Europe to rebuild a sustainable, sovereign and competitive industrial base against a backdrop of profound global economic restructuring.
The conference was opened by Louis Gautier, Chair of the Chair in Major Contemporary Strategic Issues. In his opening remarks, he emphasised how industrial issues are now inextricably linked to the major challenges of sovereignty, economic security and European power.
Deep Blue was then honoured to welcome Louis Gallois, a distinguished public servant and business leader, former chairman of the SNCF, former executive at EADS and Airbus, former Commissioner-General for Investment and author of the report on French competitiveness. His career, spanning government, industry and economic strategy, lent this conference a particular depth.
The discussion was chaired by Simon Quesemand Berman, General Manager of Public Relations and Advocacy at Deep Blue, on the topic: ‘Reindustrialising France and Europe in the face of Chinese competition’.
During the discussion, several major issues were addressed: the deindustrialisation of France, Europe’s place in global value chains, China’s rising industrial power, technological sovereignty, the role of the state as a strategic actor, and the conditions necessary for a European industrial revival.
This conference also served as a reminder that reindustrialisation is not merely an economic issue. It calls upon our collective ability to manage our dependencies, to train new generations of engineers, researchers, decision-makers and entrepreneurs, and to build a Europe capable of defending its interests in the face of international competition.
Through this partnership with the Chair in Major Contemporary Strategic Issues, Deep Blue is pursuing its ambition: to create forums for dialogue between students, young professionals, public decision-makers and leading figures from the business world, with a view to addressing major contemporary strategic challenges.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Louis Gallois for his excellent presentation, to Louis Gautier for his warm welcome and openness, and to all the participants who came to take part in this challenging and necessary discussion.
In a world characterised by the resurgence of power politics, industrial leadership is once again becoming an essential prerequisite for sovereignty.
With this conference, Deep Blue reaffirms its commitment to contributing to the debate on the major economic, industrial and strategic issues that will shape the future of France and Europe.
