Law, Multilateralism and Ocean Governance
Law of the sea, blue diplomacy and multilateral negotiations: devising governance frameworks capable of reconciling sovereign rights, scientific expertise and supranational legal regimes.
A project led by Deep Blue Foundation
An interdisciplinary academic programme dedicated to maritime issues, organised into four Study Centres.
Scientific project
Whilst the sea is emerging as one of the major strategic challenges of the 21st century, maritime issues remain insufficiently integrated into French higher education. Climate, biodiversity, maritime transport, the security of trade routes, submarine cables, sovereignty, energy, fisheries and the blue economy: these issues are addressed in a piecemeal manner, without a cross-cutting framework capable of bringing them together.
The Chair aims to address this shortfall. Situated at the intersection of the humanities and social sciences, law, economics, geography, history, international relations and environmental sciences, it offers a shared framework for analysing contemporary changes in the maritime sector, training the next generation and providing a forum for analysis and debate amongst universities, institutions and stakeholders in the sector.
It has its own management and scientific organisation, and carries out its work through four Study Centres.
