Deep Blue will open the ‘Sciences & Ocean’ conference at Sciences Po Reims
On 19 March,Lorenzo Specty Vice-President of Deep Blue Foundation, will open the ‘Sciences & Ocean’ conference organised at Sciences Po Reims, in front of the institution’s students. This event forms part of the launch of the Reims RIMUN section of the French Association for the United Nations (AFNU).
This introductory address will provide an opportunity to review several major developments in international ocean governance, at a time when maritime issues are playing an increasingly prominent role in diplomatic and scientific debates.
Recent years have indeed seen an acceleration in international developments relating to the ocean. The United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) has helped to put ocean issues back at the heart of the multilateral agenda. Furthermore, the gradual ratification of the BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) treaty, which is dedicated to the protection of biodiversity on the high seas, marks a new phase in the regulation and conservation of maritime areas beyond national jurisdictions.
The year 2026 will also be a significant milestone for environmental diplomacy, with the first COP dedicated to the ocean taking place in New York, which is expected to mark a further step forward in shaping the international governance of this strategic domain.
Against this backdrop, the conference will bring together researchers, diplomats and experts to discuss a key question:
what form should ocean diplomacy take as the High Seas Treaty is implemented?
